The Secret to Achieving the Perfect Profile: Balancing the Chin and Lips with Filler
Samantha Cote, RN | Injectionist
When looking at an individual from their profile, what features make them appear beautiful? Is it a straight button nose, soft plump lips, or maybe a sharply chiseled chin? The key to a beautiful profile cannot be attributed to any of these features individually but rather to how they complement each other as a whole.
Cosmetic procedures using dermal filler are minimally invasive and ideal for those seeking to enhance their profile appearance with minimal recovery time. One of the most commonly requested enhancements involves injecting filler into the lips to achieve fullness and volume. As lip filler continues to increase in popularity, we must also remember that profile balance correlates to beauty, and the chin plays a crucial role. When considering lip filler, we should also consider enhancing the chin.
How do we determine if the chin and lips are properly balanced, and who is the right candidate for chin filler?
We can rely on the Silver Method to understand what criteria would deem an individual’s profile as balanced. This method is a clinical evaluation technique to objectively measure the position of the chin and lips in relation to each other. To do so, a vertical line is drawn perpendicular to the Frankfort Horizontal Plane. This vertical line touches the vermillion border of the lower lip. An ideal female chin would be just shy (1mm-2mm) of touching the line at the pogonion (the most anteriorly projected point of the chin). A chin that is recessed will not be as flattering and, therefore, will result in disharmony of the facial features.
To restore harmony and balance to the profile, we can use dermal fillers in the chin and lips. When performing a lip enhancement, we must always assess the position of the chin. Big beautiful lips may look out of place if enhanced against a recessed chin. A combination of lip and chin filler can provide ideal results in terms of both balance and beauty.
